LUSH Valley Food Action Society hosts a free day of garden workshops and the launch of its mobile community cooler. The event takes place at the Share the Harvest Community Garden at 721 Harmston Ave. in Courtenay from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, July 9. There will be more than 12 workshops led by gardening experts with plenty of time for tours and mingling – a way to showcase community gardens and give back to the community for its support and involvement. At noon, there will be an unveiling of a mobile community cooler which will be operational for the apple harvest of this season’s Fruit Tree Program and beyond.
“The Share the Harvest community garden is in bloom and looking great,” said Daniel Tucker, garden co-ordinator. “I am so excited to be showcasing the progress of the garden at this year’s Gardenfest. The workshops will cover everything from composting and permaculture to pollinator gardens and yoga as well as a seed swap and activities for the kids. It is going to be a great day.”
This venue will also provide an opportunity for people to learn more about LUSH programs and the community cooler.
“The unit will allow for greater distribution of healthy local fruits and vegetables to people who need it the most, and will help us ensure that less of the bounty of this region goes to waste,” said Jessica Hawkins, former executive director and current board member. ” The vision is that the cooler will be able to meet people where they are at in their neighbourhoods and community centres.”
“Gardenfest is a family friendly event, focused on helping people gain the skills and knowledge they need to grow their own food,” said Andrea Cupelli, program manager. “We will also be taking a waitlist for those interested in a plot in the community garden, and looking for volunteers for this year’s Fruit Tree Program.”
As well as running a community garden, LUSH is just starting its Fruit Tree Program, which harvested and distributed 58,000 pounds of fruit last season. LUSH also runs many community kitchen and young cooks programs across the region.
